The characteristic feature a jobbing industry like printing is the multiplicity of specs for products that are delivered. With a single 5 colour machine if you do 7 jobs a day, each of these jobs have multiple specs - kind of finishing to despatch destination. There are 50 mistakes waiting to happen every day.

Several these mistakes occur repeatedly.  The mistakes occur not because our operators don’t know what to do; they occur because the knowledge does not come to play at the required time and place.  E.g., the folding machine requires a minimum gripper margin of ---mm or the punching machine can not handle a width of more than --- mm. The knowledge surfaces time and again during post mortem.

With IMPs, it is now possible to sit down and collect all these data – minimum, maximum job size, margin requirement, GSM limitation and store the data in IMP.

When a job is ready in Prepress all these data come into play and at Prepress level we are filtering potential errors on jobs.

IMP, need less to say, handles the various functions that an IMP like software is expected to do like

- Suggesting alternate layouts

- Planning the signatures.

- Recommending print mode- Work & Turn, Work & Tumble etc.,

- Does make sure that a colour control strip is always properly placed.

Other interesting/ thoughtful features are:

After a job is set up, you can go and correct a page without having to lay out again.

Suggests Cutting instruction considering grain direction

       Will recommend combining  jobs

Positions the job in the plate so that CTP does not have to think.

After 6 months of use IMP has become the back bone of our Prepress set up. I checked with my pre-press team on their experience using IMP. They said that they are a lot more relaxed after IMP.

To me, IMP's greatest value lies in its acting as a mistake filter; that is where I see the pay back for the product.

I see a great potential for the product.

IMP

We've been using Imp as our job planner as well as the conduit between our SAP R/3 ERP system (takes input from SAP in a simple XML format) and Esko workflow system (sends across standard JDF to Esko Backstage) over the past year. We were happy to be the beta site for the product and Metamation has been very proactive as well as quick to respond to feature requests. Imp has been very stable and we're using it for our regular production for the past many months.

Chromozone

We are using Chromozone to control our Techkon SpectroDrive auto tracking spectrophotometers on all our presses. We currently use it to analyze and display the measured data on screen for operator intervention. We look forward to taking this further with the closed loop system with automated ink key correction data being sent by Chromozone directly to our Mitsubishi presses.
